We’re playing a good team on Saturday. They have a really good player who scores most of their goals. If we lose to this team, the season will be over. What are some tips for stopping someone from shooting and stealing the ball?
One of the best ways to disrupt a shot is to minimize the space between you and the shooter. If you are standing directly where they want to be shooting, they will not be able to get a good shot off and even if they do, it will just hit you.
As long as you make an attempt to play the ball, you can also bump the shooter while they are shooting (if you don’t attempt to play the ball it is charging and you’ll likely be called for a foul).
If you need to stop them on the dribble, there are two things you need to do. First, watch the ball, not the player. The player can play tricks and do moves, but the ball can’t. No matter what the player does, it’s the ball you want – it should be your focus.
The next thing to remember is to make sure to position yourself so that the attacker must go where you want them to. If you can force them to the touchlines (sidelines), then all you really have to do is wait for the attacker to make a mistake and you can take the ball from him then.
