How Many Calories Do I Burn Playing Soccer

How many calories do I burn during each soccer game?

The exact amount of calories you burn will depend on a variety of factors including your weight, metabolism, percentage of body fat, whether you are a guy or a girl, your position, the intensity of play, and even to a lesser extent, the weather. However, here are some averages that will give you a starting point:

130 lbs
155 lbs
190 lbs
Casual / Recreational Soccer
413 cal/hr
493 cal/hr
604 cal/hr
Competitive Soccer
590 cal/hr

  1. playing on the wing of a 3-5-2 formation, how many calrioes would be burned for a adult weighing 174ilbs, competitive and around 13% body fat.

  2. What about a 138 pound girl playing goalie competitvely

    • Hi Maddy,

That’s actually a very good question, as goalie generally does not require as much constant movement, rather it requires bursts of fast movement. Unfortunately, I do not know the answer to that question.

  3. I was wondering how much calories would a 14 year old female who is 5″2 weighing about 100 pounds would burn during 1 hour of soccer.

    • Hi Lexi,

This is just a rough estimate, of course, but assuming it’s competitive soccer and not just casual play, it would be about 450 calories per hour.

  4. how much would a 17 year old 116 pound girl burn in 90 mins of soccer if she was playing center midfield the whole time?

    • Hi Zoe,

This is only an estimate, but assuming you are playing competitively (as in a league game or tournament, not just for fun with friends), it would be around 800 calories.

  5. Any idea on what a goalkeeper would burn in a 5 aside game

    • Hi Gary,

Like I told Dominic, we do not have specific numbers as far as calories burned playing small sided games. However, it is generally accepted that small sided games burn more calories than standard games.

  6. I’m interested in promoting small sided soccer as a competitive and recreational option for adult soccer players or newcomers in the Central Coast area.

I’m interested in the health benefits of smaller sided and higher intensity games. I have come across several studies that claim that there is proportionatly more running (distance covered) on average in 5 a side (5v5) than in regular 11 a side games. Do you guys have any studies aimed at calories burnt per hour of small sided soccer in comparison to other sports including regular full sized soccer?

    • Hi Dominic,

Unfortunately we do not have specific numbers as far as calories burned playing small sided games. However, it is generally accepted that small sided games burn more calories than standard games.

  7. What about a kid weighing say 90 pounds?

    • Hi Claudia,

A 90 pound child would burn about 286 calories/hour playing at a casual intensity and about 410 calories/hour playing at a competitive intensity.
