Cariocas

An effective, yet under used exercise that helps to improve balance and speed, and does absolute wonders for agility and coordination is the carioca (sometimes mis-pronounced “karaokes”).

  • Players begin with feet approximately shoulder width apart.
  • Players move sideways crossing right foot over left with first step then left foot over right with next step, and continuing this way for the duration of the exercise.
  • Arms should be out to the side for improved balance.
  • The whole of the body should remain facing one direction, with the twisting movement coming from the hips, not the legs.

Quickly transition from carioca to sprint for an added dimension of acceleration training as in the video below.
